OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION SHRINE AT SAINT EDWARD CHURCH
Saint Agnes Church closed at the end of June after a over one hundred years of service to the community. While the future of the property will be determined by the Diocese of Providence, there is one special item which Bishop Richard Henning gave permission to remove. Back in the 1950s. former pastor of the parish, the late Monsignor Thomas Cassidy donated a marble statue of Our Lady of the Assumption in commemoration of the proclamation of the Dogma of the Assumption in 1950 and the 100th Anniversary of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception. This beautiful statue stood in back of the church building with limited visibility. The statue and its granite base are being transported to a newly poured foundation next to Saint Edward Church where emerald arborvitae will surround it and seasonal flowers will be planted. The shrine can be approached on Branch Avenue by the original granite steps which accessed the site of the former rectory. Special thanks to Ed Bolduc for cleaning the statue and arranging the move. We will post further information as this project progresses.
