“To couples who cannot have children of their own, you are no less loved by God; your love for each other is complete and fruitful when it is open to others.” -Pope Saint John Paul II

Although we may feel unsure how best to comfort those who mourn, we must stand with them in their time of suffering. Miscarriage touches the lives of many people, yet all too often this tragedy remains unaddressed. As members of a community of faith ourselves, let us comfort those who mourn as we look forward together to a time when all tears are dried and our families are whole once again.

Saints Anne and Joachim, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus, are powerful intercessors for all married couples, expectant mothers, and married couples who are having difficulty conceiving, as well as those who are aging. The Feast of Saints Anne and Joachim is celebrated on July 26. Beginning this year, Pope Francis has also instituted the fourth Sunday in July as World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.

God’s love - individual, real, unchanging - is the true source of our worth, identity, and dignity. It really is not a question of who we are, but rather whose we are. Because his love will never change, nothing can reduce our God-given dignity, and nothing can diminish the immeasurable worth of our lives.

Through our prayers and through the intercession of Saint Joseph, patron of fathers, may fathers come to know the irreplaceable role they hold in the lives of their children, and the responsibility they share in welcoming God’s gift of new life!

Last month, two parishioners from our tri - parish family were instrumental in helping a young couple, originally seeking an abortion, keep their child. We often think that by the time a woman reaches Planned Parenthood, her mind is made up. But so often, women go there still searching for a reason to keep their babies. This couple, along with their toddler and pre-born child, made it safely to the Mother of Life Pregnancy Center where she was able to obtain emotional and physical healthcare. One more life saved here in Rhode Island, all due to the prayers of the community! Please continue to pray for this family. May God give them peace and courage to protect both of their children!

In modern times, children in their mothers’ wombs and those approaching the end of their lives are certainly among the “least of these” in our world’s estimation. Practices such as abortion and assisted suicide tragically reject the truth that human life is always to be cherished and defended with loving concern.
Through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, may Our Lord grant us the grace to truly and courageously live his Gospel of life.
