THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

To serve human life is to serve God and life at every stage: from the womb of the mother, to the suffering and sickness of old age.

-Pope Francis

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS

Ash Wednesday is fast approaching on February 14th. The following are the guidelines for fasting and abstinence:

No meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent for those 14 and older. Are required by church law.

Also Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting. Those between the ages of 14-59 should eat less, meaning, take no solid food between meals and only one full meal that day. Serious health conditions excuse a person from these precepts.

Parents are encouraged by the law of the church to ensure that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated nonetheless.

2018 LENTEN SEASON

Once again another opportunity for spiritual growth is upon us beginning Ash Wednesday on February 14.  For your spiritual reading we are happy to offer a free book entitled THE CASE FOR JESUS + The Biblical and Historical Evidence for Christ by Brant Pitre.  This is a more of a scholarly work which can be read to deepen one’s appreciation of the Gospels and the identity of Jesus Christ in this age of religious skepticism.  A limited number of copies will be available at all three churches on the first Sunday of Lent.  Also during lent an invitation will be extended to anyone interested in serving in our tri-parish outreach ministries.  Please give prayerful consideration to making a sacrifice of your time to assist the poor and homeless whom the privilege to serve.

WINTER HEATING ASSISTANCE GRANTS

Through the generosity of a generous benefactor of our tri-parish community there are restricted funds available for parishioners experiencing financial difficulties heating their homes during this cold winter season.  In order to be considered for a grant applicants need to be registered and attending members of one of the three parishes.  If there are children in the household they should be attending religious education classes.  Only confidential letters addressed to Father Ed at the rectory will be accepted and reviewed.  Please provide contact information in the letter.  Funds will be awarded on the basis of need and sent directly to National Grid or heating oil company. Do not call the rectory and leave messages.  There already is a heavy volume of calls that come into the rectory daily from the three parishes and beyond.

RECENT INFLUENZA OUTBREAK CONCERNS

Influenza activity has been more widespread this year than in previous ones.  Moreover, this year’s flu vaccine is less effective in the prevention of influenza A than in prior years.  Thus we need to be as cautious and prudent as possible in responding to any possible threat, especially for children and the elderly.   Because of this the practice of distribution of the Precious Blood of Christ from the chalice at weekend liturgies will be discontinued for the time being until the flu season is over.  As far as the sign of peace you are asked to exercise prudence when the invitation is extended.  A warm smile, nod of the head or a wave of the hand can substitute for physical contact.  Anyone with symptoms of illness should be very careful to avoid any physical contact that could transmit the virus to others.  Always carry hand sanitizer.  Anyone with serious symptoms should stay home.  Let us pray for the Lord’s protection upon our parishes during this time when many people have been infected.

HOLY FAMILY NEWS

ON LINE GIVING REMINDER

For all families who are currently using the online giving program we ask that you log into your account and update any information that has changed since you setup your initial account. This is also a good time to check your statements to see that your offering is being processed as you originally set it up. We have received notification of expired credit cards and invalid email addresses. Also, you should only set up your account once and have your offering deducted from that account; there are a few users who set up a new account each time they make an offering. If you have not signed up for online giving, please consider doing so. Log onto the parish website, stanthonychurch.org, click on the online giving icon, choose the church you are registered at and follow the menu driven screen. The help desk for all online questions is  1-800-348-2886 ext 4.
